Self Hypnosis

Self Hypnosis is similar to a meditative trance. However, rather than emptying the mind to achieve inner peace or stillness, the goal is to accomplish a specific task. Self Hypnosis is often used in conjunction with hypnosis by a trained therapist to enhance the trance goals established in the initial session. However, it can also be used alone to address simple, non-threatening issues.

Self Hypnosis is not difficult. But, it is necessary to set aside some uninterrupted time, two or three times every day, to practice. The following are some basic steps to get you started:

  1. Find a time and place where you will be undisturbed.

  2. Sit or lie down and close your eyes.

  3. Focus on your breathing. Count down slowly from 10 to 1, exhaling your breath with each number.

  4. Let your mind drift without any specific direction.

  5. Give yourself one clear suggestion aloud. For example, “I will sleep well through the night and wake refreshed.” Repeat the suggestion aloud several times.

  6. Relax for 10 long breaths.

  7. Then count from 1 to 10, telling yourself to become more alert with each number. You will be fully alert at 10.

Please know that self hypnosis should not be attempted to address deep seated emotional problems. Treat your mind gently and with respect and always seek professional help with serious situations.
